Automated Fare Collection (AFC) Systems for public transport

Is your public transport system struggling with any of the following?

  • Inconvenient cash handling?
  • Inconsistent reconciliation?
  • Unbanked fare collections?
  • Unreliable data collection trend analysis?
  • Lack of personalisation?
  • Lack of complex fare structures?
  • Lack of multi-modal fare payment?
  • Lack of multiple payment methods?

Our AFC System assists passengers and operators in their transit journey through a variety of contactless card technologies. With the future of cashless public commuter services, these problems become a thing of the past.

Automated Fare Collection features:

  • Fare Management Solutions for all modes of transport and all types of fare media
  • Integrates multiple card issuers (up to 3 transit products)
  • Performs financial apportionment and settlement between service providers
  • Supports and performs a prepaid cash module
  • Supports high volumes of cards and transactions
  • Scalable: can cater for large multi-operator, multi-modal operations, or small single operators
  • Seamless integration to internal systems and payment processing engines
  • Compliance with industry standards

Benefits of AFC

Simplify ridership reporting

Ease and convenience for end-users and operators

Reduce wait times

Enhance passenger experience

Minibus taxi services

With the SA government planning to offer subsidies to the taxi industry, operators will need a system in place for proper reconciliation and record-keeping. ICT-Works has the solution. Our minibus taxi solution includes an automatic fare collection solution as well as an APTMS-lite service.

AFC for minibus taxis

Automated fare collection for minibus taxis is a streamlined, cost-effective way for commuters to pay for taxi rides and for operators to track their transactions.

  • Fixed fare and distance-based fare options
  • Works via validating machine on taxi vehicle, or the driver’s mobile phone
  • Notifications sent using SMS, smartphone application or WhatsApp

APTMS-lite for minibus taxis

  • Monitor all journeys in real time
  • Planning, scheduling and dispatching of drivers
  • Optimise vehicle usage and driver requirements
  • Create complex vehicle and duty schedules
  • Make the most out of the available resources
  • Reduce waiting time for commuters

1.2 million +

Daily passenger kilometres

The City of Cape Town’s MyCiti programme is an Integrated Rapid Transit (RI) system designed to integrate Metrorail services, conventional bus services, minibus taxis, metered taxis, and park-and-ride facilities. We designed and deployed a state-of-the-art, flexible, and scalable Automated Fare Collection System for access control and fare payment to facilitate interfacing and interoperability with adjacent intelligent transport systems.

Central to the solution is the Multiple Application Smartcard System (MASS), capable of integrating multiple card issuers and requiring financial apportionment and settlement between service providers. In addition to the design and deployment of these systems, we provide full maintenance and operations services after delivery.

This system would serve the key route between Ikorodu and Tafawa Balewa Square.

To deliver LAMATA’s bus control centre, ICT-Works implemented the following:

  • On-vehicle technologies
  • Back office process
  • Operations planning
  • Operations monitoring and optimisation
  • Driver scheduling

We also launched a mobile app, the Lagos BRT, as well as electronic displays at bus stops along the BRT route to enable passengers to get real-time departure information. The system was successfully launched in 2011.

What our clients say about our intelligent transport solutions

In my capacity as Consulting Engineer (appointed by LAMATA), I'm satisfied with the project management, delivery and governance executed by ICT-Works in delivering this project, and would highly recommend them for similar projects

Managing Consultant Genyz Transport Solutions
Overall, the City is satisfied with the way in which ICT Works has implemented this world first Europay, Mastercard, Visa (EMV) compliant transit-related AFC system within which no cash is accepted, except at time of value loading onto the bank card. ICT Works has demonstrated their ability to deal with risk, even at times, under difficult circumstances. Therefore, I have no hesitation in recommending ICT-Works for services in this regard.
